What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is a condition in which you experience a loss of bladder control, leading to urine leakage. There are several types, each with different causes and symptoms:

  • Stress incontinence – Leakage occurs during physical activities that put pressure on the bladder, such as coughing, sneezing, or exercising.
  • Urge incontinence – A sudden, strong need to urinate leads to leakage before you can reach the restroom. The frequency and intensity can vary.
  • Overflow incontinence – The bladder doesn’t fully empty, causing continuous or frequent leakage.
  • Mixed incontinence – A combination of two or more types of incontinence.

A consultation with Dr. Ahdoot can help determine which type you have and guide your treatment.

What causes urinary incontinence?

Incontinence can result from temporary or chronic conditions:

Temporary causes:

  • Pregnancy
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Excessive alcohol or caffeine intake
  • Certain diuretics or medications

Chronic causes:

  • Aging and menopause
  • Childbirth or vaginal delivery
  • Hysterectomy or pelvic surgery
  • Pelvic organ prolapse

Hormonal changes during menopause can weaken vaginal tissue and pelvic muscles, making bladder control more challenging. While aging is natural, effective treatments are available to manage urinary incontinence.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

After reviewing your symptoms and performing a physical exam (and, if needed, urine analysis), Dr. Ahdoot creates a personalized treatment plan. Options may include:

  • Bladder training and fluid management
  • Pelvic floor exercises to strengthen support muscles
  • Hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women
  • Medications to control bladder activity
  • Pessaries for bladder support in prolapse cases
  • Botox® injections to relax overactive bladder muscles
  • Surgical solutions for pelvic organ prolapse

Often, the best results come from combining medical treatment with behavioral strategies to address the problem from multiple angles.

If urinary leakage is affecting your daily life, help is available. Call Dr. Ahdoot’s office or use the online scheduler to book a consultation.
